The shocking number of deaths and crashes on road where four young men died Call for action to be taken after a series of tragedies on stretch of road where four friends had their lives cut short There are calls for action on a stretch of road where four young men were tragically killed in a crash last week - after a worrying run of fatal accidents in recent years. Jack Diggle, 23; Benjamin Dooley, 23; Andrew Roberts, 24 and Craig Shackleton-Brady, 26 all died after the Black Supra car they were travelling in came off a stretch of East Prescot Road in the early hours of Friday July 24. The tragedy has led to an outpouring of grief from the families and friends of the young men, with a shrine of flowers, cards and other tributes placed around a tree near where the crash happened. But this is far from the only fatal crash to have occurred on this stretch of road, where East Prescot Road becomes Liverpool Road and where the city of Liverpool becomes the borough of Knowsley. The ECHO has reported on at least six major crashes resulting in 11 deaths in this area in the last decade - and local people say there have been many more serious incidents than that. In October 2016, 13-year-old Frankie Murphy was killed after riding his bicycle into the path of a car on this stretch of road, prompting an outpouring of sadness. In the summer of 2018, dozens of tributes were left after Ryan Owens died when his bike collided with a Nissan Juke at the junction of East Prescot Road and Ashover Avenue, just metres from where Friday's horror crash occurred. In August of 2021, three young people were killed in a crash when a BMW careered into a roundabout on East Prescot Road. Alex Ford, 28; Scott Simpson, 28, and Jay McEvoy, 33, were all the in the same car and died when the driver lost control of the vehicle In October 2021, Luqman Mehboob was the passenger in a Volkswagen Golf GTI that crashed into a roundabout on East Prescot Road. He died at the scene. Nasrin Saleh was driving the car at 103mph after inhaling large quantities of nitrous oxide along East Prescot Road. She then crashed the car into the roundabout with Pilch Lane, flipping it onto its side before it caught fire. Saleh was jailed for four and a half years in 2023 after admitting causing death by dangerous driving. On January 16 this year Catherine 'Cathy' Dodd, from, Huyton died after being hit by a car at the junction of Liverpool Road and Hillside Road just before 5am. The 59-year-old died at the scene. A 35-year-old man was arrested at the scene and was later released under investigation. Friday's horror crash, in which four young men died, takes the numbers who have died on this stretch of road to deeply worrying levels, something that local people say means action must now be taken. One man living in East Prescot Road, just yards from where last week's tragedy occurred, said he has tried to raise these issues before. The man, who asked not to be named, said: "I told them when they come knocking around for our vote. I explained the amount of accidents we have had on this stretch of road and said something needed to be done, but I never heard back. "I didn't hear Friday's accident, but when my wife said there had been an accident, I thought oh no, not another one." Detailing the regularity of crashes near his house, he added: "My neighbour had a car written off, another had their gates smashed. My wall has been hit twice. Another neighbour had two cars written off and the house on the corner has actually had a car run into the front garden and into the living room. He added: "There was a girl killed just outside my house here when she was crossing the road, her shoe was in my garden. My neighbour was trying to help her but sadly she died. So many accidents in one spot. "It's a dangerous stretch, they have a lot of time to build up speed. There have been so many accidents at this junction. They need to put a speed camera in on each side." Another East Prescot Road resident, who also didn't want to give his name, agreed, adding: ""The lad over the road there (pointing to tributes tied to a lamp post), that was eight years ago. I think there has been six bad accidents here in the last ten years. They need the speed cameras. "I think you need the cameras, definitely. I've been here 17 years and we have seen a lot of accidents in this time. "My daughter used to live further up where there were two accidents. Something has to be done." He added: "It is terrible what happened (last Friday), they were only young lads." The ECHO approached Liverpool City Council to ask if any action is planned to try and reduce the number of incidents on this stretch of road. Much of the road in question comes under Liverpool Council's jurisdiction, whereas it becomes Knowsley further up as East Prescot Road turns into Liverpool Road. A Liverpool City Council spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the families, friends and loved ones of the four men who tragically lost their lives. We recognise the profound impact this incident will have on all those affected and on the wider community. “Keeping all road users safe on our roads is an issue that we take extremely seriously. Each year, the Council reviews all road traffic collision data provided by Merseyside Police to identify where additional measures may help reduce the risk of future incidents. “This evidence-based analysis informs our Local Safety Scheme programme, which prioritises locations deemed to be at risk of similar collisions. East Prescot Road is included as part of this ongoing review process and will be assessed alongside other locations across the city to determine whether further safety measures may be required.”
